Sarah Weis and Follow Spot! art space are a fraud in another artist paint staind pants.

Sarah Weis and this fraud of a 'art' space called Follow Spot! are in it to exploit the arts... they're in it to elevate themselves into the entertainment business... they're in it for themselves, not that that's a bad thing... if your self isn't void of all.

they're royalty and the artist is the jester... their business card should read - "look at us, we surround our selves with whacky artists - therefore we have something going on."

I was recently booked for an event at "Follow Spot!". I had issue with their lack luster promotion and more so how I was/wasn't represented.

I spoke my mind, brought up the problem and was canceled from the event.

I draw few lines in the sand but if I know you and you have anything to do with these dolts I will question why I know you... for you must be a moron or a doormat, neither do I want to associate with.

In Sarah's first message of excuse and justification she stated she didn't want to censor... yet she did.

talk about projecting your intent.

Maybe you could be a promoter instead if you have such a problem with other people s promotional tactics. Or you could be a less uptight artist and do your shit even when someone isn't 'promoting' you. Wow imagine that. Of course, this is none of my business but come ONnnnnn dude get it together

he got it together. there's just the trouble of not being given the benefit of having a link attached to the event itself. that's called common courtesy in the internet age-it's like having good manners, which you don't seem to have mr/mrs. anonymous. get so chutzpah and post your name.

dear anonymous: you see I wasn't uptight. I was the exact opposite. I said something about the lack of concern and posted my link my self. without bothering the venue... they messaged me, not vise versa.

it seems I expressed myself too much. I thought I was speaking to/with a gallery run buy artists. it's been my experience that you can never express yourself too much when in the company of real artists.

seems I was speaking to the plague of the art world - the art school grad, desperate to show that they can make a living off of their newly taught trade. the one ma and dad helped finance even tho they wanted their upper middle class darling to go to med school.

the art world has been used by these fakes for too long - the artist who creates without care for earning, without care for making friends or networking, the artist who HAS to express themselves or DIE needs to speak up more... they need to shun the frauds and create their own galleries and have shows among themselves.

yes, once in a while a brave artschool student will make it thru the cracks, they will steal your ideas and emulate your style... they might even offer to buy your paint speckled pants to look the part. oh well, the world need some class - even if only thru secondary osmosis. and, good for you the true artist always needs a good laugh.

remember, they NEVER do it for FREE. they call it an investment behind your back, so if you're gonna play with the posing class - make them pay... make them fuckin pay or tell them to go away.

Dubi Kaufmann: I feel that sid yidish and myself were. not only was the honest comment I made on the facebook page created to promote this event deleted... I was ultimately pulled from the event because I wouldn't say sorry for honestly expressing myself.

the performance piece was titled "taking back the swastika".

I have done what I do for 25 years. I have curated many a show, promoted too many events to count and owned more than one gallery. I have made a living off of what I make for 20 years. I have been on all sides of the coin as exploiter and exploitee and never have I had such a trivial moment turn into all out war.

mr. bugbee--
you have devoted excessively more energy into defaming sarah weis than into promoting your own project. pick your battles...you're 41 and acting like a high school drama club reject. you'll probably find that people "censor" you a lot when you behave rudely.

anna-- behave? awww fuck you.
I'm 41 and that has what to do with this?

quit with the name calling and address the issues.

I'd say they picked a fight with someone who fights back. maybe that's unusual in the art world that youz exist in.

defaming sarah? hardly. get it straight - these are really sarah's actions and this really happened... address the issues.

sid and myself worked hard on the piece we were doing... for FREE mind you and I shouldn't be upset? I'd say if anything these actions defame us! now we might look, unprofessional, unruly ect and so on... maybe it's less fight and more defense against sarah's attack. she did message me, I only responded to her over the top self centered ignorance.

there's a balance one must strike when being self centered and greedy... part of that is to not piss off the folks you use to gain your riches, whatever those riches might be.

as a politically motivated individual I feel it's my responsibility to fight back... I'd rather have peace... I would have rather the show went on.

Shane,

You are a smart guy, we share some of the same opinions, and you have my respect because I have been keeping my eye on your posts on and off for a while. I'm not short-sighted or simple-minded enough to just call you or anyone else an asshole without knowing exactly what happened first hand.

But wouldn't you think that someone out to exploit the arts would promote to your satisfaction if that was their agenda?

Don't you think that your conclusion about being "elevated into the entertainment business" is just a little melodramatic?

I like Sarah's work, I think it stands distinctly apart from the art school cannibalism that you speak of, and I'm under the impression that her shows aren't often scarcely attended. Even if they were, how many artists do you know whose work is worth a damn, spend a lot of time pouring over their methods of promotion?

Also, early on I had to go a little out of my way to find out what exactly you have done other than putting up Might Is Right for download and going on a road trip funded by donations. How you can make a living without spamming the hell out of people is beyond me, but I commend you for it. Still, to call people unprofessional in the same tangent that you take cheap shots is more than a little counter-intuitive to my eyes.

Unless you have failed to be clear, it seems to me that you were complaining about your url not being attached to a facebook post. How trivial is that?

So you made an "honest" comment that may have been considered rude without the luxury of inflecting tone in text, and the people who work hard to exploit the arts didn't want to bother with the drama. Could that be what happened? Does it always have to be about some big "Mommy he censored me" fiasco?

All this talk about a "true artist". Do you really think a "true artist" should talk that much shit on the internet?

No intent for a pissing contest here, it's just a simple case of curiosity killing the cat. And as I said, I think you're a smart guy, but with all due respect, even for "upper low class" I would think that to react to what you consider unprofessional behavior with even more unprofessional behavior would be beneath you by now.

no, not necessarily... it really depends on what their agenda is. seems their agenda isn't what it seems to be tho.

Don't you think that your conclusion about being "elevated into the entertainment business" is just a little melodramatic?

maybe, but prove me wrong... I'd say the self set up iMDB page is a clue.

how many artists do you know whose work is worth a damn, spend a lot of time pouring over their methods of promotion?

all of them... it's how they pay the rent.

Also, early on I had to go a little out of my way to find out what exactly you have done other than putting up Might Is Right for download and going on a road trip funded by donations...

what does any of this have to do with the issues?
this isn't about what I do or my popularity.
but I'd bet I've done more than every person who has commented under this blog combined... and when I say 'done more' I mean I've created or contributed to items/expressions that have been noticed by cultures above and underground... yea, I'd bet the farm on that my friend.

maybe I haven't been clear - maybe I should post the email exchange and a detailed account. or maybe you can see this for what it is - me giving sarah a lesson in how not to be half assed or a whole ass.

I knew this would happen tho - it always does when you do stuff for free... shame that so many can't be trusted to appreciate the gift of free. I did this as a favor to sid, but I knew it... had the venue paid, had they invested and time/money into the event they'd be more diligent and maybe even considerate.

now mr. man - please explain how expressing my self, how ever I feel, within the art world, is unprofessional?

Alright, I will butt out of this entanglement dealing with personal accounts. It's none of my business how other people run their business, but ultimately this is a public forum, and if you wouldn't like me to share my opinion please feel free to tell me so.

The amount or quality of your work is not in question from me. I have stated that. My statement about not being aware of your work right off the bat was only to point out the possibility that someone could take issue with your methods of promotion, given the right situation. It has nothing to do with your influence or your output. As I said, you have my respect.

"the issues" that you speak of between yourself and Sarah, ultimately lie between the both of you. I'm not going to bat for anyone here as much as I am expressing my opinion about the nature of this post. It's not my concern what your story or her story is, but if your conclusion is as exaggerated as your dialogue I would obviously already find something to be suspect.

What I find to be unsound is your method of airing your problems about people that I like. I'm not a moron or a doormat and I am friends or friendly acquaintances with a fair amount of folks who have been featured on Follow Spot. I can tell you that they were not there because they were "wacky". If you want to call me a fake artist, I don't give a flying fuck. Just because it's not dealing with taboo subjects doesn't mean that it's "void of all" or it's the result of stealing someone else's ideas. And who goes on a blog saying that someone is "void of all"?. It must have been one hell of an email exchange!

Some of the better artists I have seen don't get shown, they maybe have a myspace page with images or they share with their friends. No proper website, no income on art, no prospects for any. I think a lot of shitty artists spend 75% promoting and 25% making something to show off to girls. Most of what I see in galleries or coffee shops etc does nothing for me.
Most of what critics love bores the shit out of me.

It's a given that I am low on the art-o-meter when it comes to influence or sales. If that is something you want to use against me with regard to what I am arguing, we could easily end the discussion. If I'm not good enough to express my opinion in the same place you are fighting back against oppressors, again, all you have to do is say so.

Ultimately, you could have just said "I had a bad experience in my dealings with Follow Spot, I wasn't happy with their promotion or the way they work with artists, and I wouldn't advise other people to work with them. "

Instead you went into all of this "true artist" grandstanding and said they borrow the pants of real artists. You said that anyone who has anything to do with them is probably dumb as rocks. Over a goddamn facebook post. I am friends with her on facebook and sometimes she doesn't even promote on facebook for her events! Apparently she doesn't need to, and she doesn't want to spam the living hell out of people. I don't care about the email exchange but I doubt it would merit such a reaction. I hope we agree at least on one thing, that nobody is beyond reproach, and I'm just plain disappointed in this kind of over-the-top self-inflated jack-in-the-box antics. Especially if you're in the corner of the artist and not the jester. Too many people get that confused.
